Library and Learning Center Resources

An overview of library services & resources for FTCC students.

General Services

  • Getting a Library Card: Bring your Student ID to the Circulation Desk (located upstairs in the Paul H. Thompson Library). The librarian will register you as a current student and will place a barcode sticker on the back of your Student ID. This barcode will allow you to check out books, keyboard/mouse sets for wall mounted computers, and various course reserves which must be viewed in the library.

  • Using the Computers: We have public desktop computers that you can access with your FTCC email & password.
  • Checking Out Books: Our books may be checked out by current FTCC students with a Student ID that has a library barcode attached to the back. Most of our books may be checked out for two weeks and can be renewed online.  Books on reserve by an instructor are limited to one week or three day checkouts. Check your email for due dates.
  • Inter-Library Loan (ILL): If you need a specific book that isn't available at FTCC or other community colleges, we have inter-library loan. Please fill out this form and allow approximately two weeks for books (or 2 business days for articles).
  • Copy & Fax Machines: There are two copy/print machines in the library. One upstairs in the main library, and the other downstairs in the Student Learning Center. The Fax machine is located downstairs in the Learning Center.
  • Notary Services: Notary services are provided FREE for all current students and instructors. Simply bring your State ID and Student ID to either the Circulation or the Reference Desk and ask to speak with one of our two notaries on staff. [Note: you must bring both forms of identification for Notary Services.]
  • Book Sale: Here at Paul H. Thompson Library we have a perpetual book sale! All titles are only $1.00 a piece, regardless of whether they are hardcover or paperback. We have a large variety of topics and encourage all students to browse the books at least a few times per semester. Please do not bring bills larger that $5, as we do not keep enough change on hand for transactions with larger denominations.

Student & Faculty Services

  • Ask-a-Librarian (Quick Help): FTCC students, faculty and staff may ask reference questions either in person, by phone or by email:

  • Book-a-Librarian (BAL) (In-Depth Help): Provides assistance to students in the use of library resources with one-on-one research instruction from a professional academic librarian. Please call 910-678-7351 to arrange a BAL.
  • Librarian-led orientations for research methods & information (Click here to request instruction)
  • Streaming videos to enrich your teaching: Access to Hoopla, Dogwood Digital, and Films on Demand via library databases (training available).
  • Suggest-a-Purchase: Use this form to suggest book titles for purchase and addition to the library.
  • Course Reserves: If you have supplemental course readings, you can request the library to hold the readings at the circulation desk (either a library or personal copy of book). Please use this form to request reserves.
  • Faculty Development Resources: Check out the Faculty Development Resources page for books and articles about better teaching & course delivery strategies.
