Nine Reasons to Consider a Book Club Discussion for Your Department

  • Book clubs offer a low-cost way to develop professionally without relying on travel funds, conference fees, or external vendors.

  • They allow faculty and staff to continuously expand knowledge relevant to teaching, leadership, student support, and workplace culture.

  • Improving the skills, well-being, and collaboration of employees enhances the student experience.

  • When faculty and staff grow together, students benefit from stronger instructional quality and better support services.

  • Book clubs model lifelong learning among employees.

  • They demonstrate that professional growth is ongoing — not limited to formal trainings.

  • Book clubs create space for faculty and staff from different departments, campuses, and roles to connect and learn from one another.

  • This supports a culture of open dialogue, creativity, and shared mission — especially important in a large, multi-site college like FTCC.

  • Reading professional and leadership literature encourages faculty and staff to reflect on their own methods and decisions.

  • Participants bring what they learn back to their classrooms and departments, improving practice in direct and practical ways.

  • Book clubs help faculty and staff explore topics like student engagement, trauma-informed support, teamwork, inclusivity, and positive workplace culture.

  • These conversations lead to actionable changes in how we interact with students and with each other.

  • Facilitating discussions, sharing takeaways, and applying insights help participants build leadership skills.

  • Provides opportunities for emerging leaders to grow in confidence and professional identity.

  • Shared reading promotes well-being, reduces isolation, and encourages thoughtful conversation.

  • The book club becomes a place to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with personal purpose in the work.

  • Can be offered online, hybrid, or in person.

  • Book selections can be aligned with campus priorities — student success, inclusive teaching, leadership, or organizational culture.

  • Can be scheduled on a semester or monthly basis, depending on demand.
